Javelin was developed for use by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps as a man-portable, anti-tank weapon. A key feature is its fire-and-forget technology. Carleton has been involved with the Javelin program since its inception in the late-1980s, and we are currently working on the second year of full-rate production. We have produced more than 5,000 cryostats and gaslines with an estimated 15,000 more to come.
Cryostat performance and features:
- Fast cooldown unit designed to optimally cool a dewar encapsulated infrared-imaging focal plan array to <90k in < 10 seconds using a 7,500 psi argon gas supply
- Dual parallel heat-exchangers with self-regulating two-flow gas control
- Integrated 5-micron wire-mesh filter
- .375 inch (.952 mm) heat exchanger diameter
- <10 gram total mass

This gasline provides cross-gimbal gas connection between the on-board cryogenic gas volume and cryostat/seeker subassembly.
Performance and features:
- Wound for 2-axis torque relief
- Integral inlet and outlet subminiature gas fittings
- Drawn and seamless stainless steel tubing
- Manufactured, cleaned, and tested with cryogenically-compatible processes

The Lightweight Exo-Atmospheric Projectile (LEAP), a kinetic energy weapon, is part of the Theater Missile Defense program. It supports the U.S. Navy's commitment to develop and field lethal seaborne theater ballistic missile defenses for U.S. and allied forces.
Carleton's LEAP vessel provides high pressure argon gas to an open-cycle Joule-Thomson cryostat. Its features include:
- Titanium alloy toroid vessel
- Welded manifold and mounting hardware
- Cryogenically-compatible pyrotechnic initiator
- Filled with 6,300 psig argon at 25 degrees C
- Hard volume of 9 cubic inches
- Burst pressure of 14,990 psig
- Filled weight of 650 grams max
